The Rain Train Traveling Sprinkler, made of rustproof cast iron, can water up to 13,500 square feet, but is more effective when covering 11,900 square feet. Its arms can be adjusted to create different spray patterns and arcs, with a range of 15 to 56 feet. The sprinkler operates as it moves along a hose, following a predetermined path similar to an electric train on tracks, except using a hose instead. To start watering, users lay out the hose carefully to avoid sharp corners or loops that could cause kinks or derail the sprinkler. The front wheel runs on the hose while the two rear wheels provide traction, with the hose connecting to the back of the sprinkler.

For optimal performance, LR Nelson recommends using a 5/8-inch hose, although a 1/2-inch hose up to 200 feet in length can also be used. When it's time to stop watering, users can place a shut-off ramp on the hose to lift the sprinkler off the "rails" and stop its operation simultaneously. It's important to install the shut-off ramp at least five feet away from the spigot. The Rain Train Traveling Sprinkler has two motor speeds, high and low. In high power mode, it travels around 37 feet per hour with a 1/4-inch water application, while in low power mode, it moves at 21 feet per hour with a 1/2-inch water application.
